Los Compadres are our 2018 NAPL Team 8-Ball Summer Season Champions
Kudos to each of the players listed below! They played their best every week, working hard to earn the top spots in their divisions. Great job!
Summer 2017 NAPL Singles Championships
Another great season of NAPL Singles 9-Ball wrapped up this weekend. After 15 weeks of regular season play, players from the NY-area's five NAPL singles leagues came together to find out who's the best in their class and who has what it takes to call themselves the NAPL Singles 9-Ball Grand Champion.
Held at Steinway Billiards September 9th & 10th, players faced off against others in their handicap class in four separate tournament brackets to claim cash prizes and bragging rights for best in class of the NAPL singles league. These final four winners continued on to battle in championship style in a new double elimination tournament to determine who was THE best overall. Summer 2017 Class Winners
During playoffs each season, players first compete for the title of Champion of their own handicap class before fighting for top prize. While Brendan Traynor (A+) and Matt Marchese (C) dominated by coming through on the win-side of their charts to the hot seat, Traynor nearly lost the top spot to fellow Irishman Julian Tierney (B) in the B & Higher division final. In true double elimination format, Tierney won the first set 9-6, delivering Traynor his first loss, only to suffer heart-breaking defeat by hanging his money ball in the hill-hill 2nd match. Both waited for it to drop, but in the end Traynor emerged victorious.
Jerry DeLeo (C+) and Debra Pritchett (D+) took the harder road. Both managed the difficult feat of coming from the one-loss side to beat the hot seat player in double sets. DeLeo gained C+ Class Champ status by defeating Andrew Tasso (the one who sent DeLeo to the loss-side) 7-4, 7-4, while Pritchett beat Rob Capurso 6-3 in the first set and sealed the deal by winning the 2nd set hill-hill. Congrats to all for top notch performances!
Garnering the NAPL Singles 9-Ball Grand Champion title is no small accomplishment. To even have a chance, one must first rise to the top and claim the title of Best in Class, or Champion of their division. Brendan Traynor, Jerry DeLeo, Matt Marchese and Debra Pritchett did exactly that this weekend. With this achievement under their belts, they faced off in a new double elimination tournament for top honors.
Brendan Traynor, B & Higher Division Champion, took on Jerry DeLeo, Champ of the C+ Class, while Matt Marchese, C Division Champ (and defending Grand Champion), faced off against Debra Pritchett, the D+/D Class Champion. Click the pic to see how the drama unfolded.
In the end, "there can be only one." Debra Pritchett sat in the hot seat, prepared to battle against Brendan Traynor in the finals. But Traynor was determined to make up for the mistakes he made when he played Pritchett the first time and lost 10-1. Giving Pritchett 6 on 10 and the 8-ball, Traynor quickly made up ground by not letting Pritchett get to the table other than to kick at a ball, reaching 10 first to her 7. In the extended race to 12, Pritchett kept her cool and did her best, playing defense and capitalizing on the few opportunities given to her. She tied the score 10-10, but in the end it wasn't quite enough. Final score was 12-10. A very well-deserved congratulations to Brendan, the new NAPL Singles 9-Ball Grand Champion!
